history of werewolves as homosexual and/or transsexual figures

a crucial and often unacknowledged aspect of werewolves is the fact that they were not portrayed as evil or violent until the start of the middle ages: despite what hollywood would like you to believe, werewolves were historically kind and even noble. in this way, even as abstract concept, werewolves have always existed paralell to various marginalized groups. something harmless that was branded violent and continously portrayed that way, despite the reality.

bisclavret (1100s)

ohh biscalvret, the original gay werewolf. if you've read the poem, its quite clear why it earns a place in the history of queer werewolves. marie de france tells a tale of a werewolf (bisclavret) trapped in wolf form by his wife who is subsequently taken in by the king and revered for his honourable qualities. when biscalvret is returned to humanity, the king "kissed him a hundred times that day". the entire poem is full to the brim with allegory and easy to read as the touching story of gay actualization.
